Another train accident makes space in the history of India as on Friday Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express collided with a goods train and derailed in Bahanaga Station in the Balasore district of Odisha.
On Friday Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express collided with a goods train near Bahanaga Station in the Balasore district of Odisha and its eight bogies derailed. After that, the Express train is believed to have hit Yashwantpur-Howrah Express from behind. The accident happened around 7.20 pm near Bahanaga Bazar station when the train was on the way to Chennai Central Station from the Shalimar station near Kolkata.
Around 200 passengers are trapped in the overturned coaches of the superfast train. Quoting preliminary reports, a railway official said that the Coromandel train was moving on the mainline. After the derailment, it hit a goods train standing on the loop line. The Express train is believed to have hit Yashwantpur-Howrah Express from behind.
At least 179 people were injured when the Coromandel Express, which runs from Shalimar station in West Bengal to Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, collided with a goods train in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday. The collision took place near the Bahanaga railway station in Balasore district and several passengers of the express train are feared dead with a lot more trapped inside the overturned coaches of the superfast train.
Four coaches of the express train got derailed following the collision with the goods train. The injured passengers were admitted to the Balasore Medical College, Community Health Centers in Soro, and Gopalpur and a Primary Health Centre in Khantapada. Out of the 179 injured passengers, 30 are in critical condition. The office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said that teams have been sent to the site of the accident for a search and rescue operation. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed state Disaster Management Minister Pramila Mallik and senior officers of the SRC along with fire services to supervise the operation.
