CM Himanta: Land Acquisition Needed for Flyover in Silchar

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says Silchar flyover requires land acquisition. If agreed upon, the project could be completed in 2.5 years.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that land acquisition is essential for the construction of a new flyover in Silchar, aimed at solving the city’s traffic congestion problems. The proposed flyover will span 7 kilometers, stretching from Capital Point to National Highway Point and from Capital Point to Ramnagar. The project, which is expected to cost over ₹1,200 crore, will require the acquisition of about two bighas of land.

During a press conference, CM Sarma emphasized the importance of land acquisition to complete the flyover within the proposed timeline. “If people agree and we can acquire the necessary land, we aim to finish the flyover in two and a half years,” he said.

The project will be constructed in two phases, each covering 3.5 kilometers. The first phase will connect Capital Point to National Highway Point, while the second phase will extend from Capital Point to Ramnagar. To accommodate narrow areas, the plan includes constructing a double-decker flyover.

CM Sarma also mentioned that efforts are being made to minimize demolition and disruption during construction. “Our goal is to carry out the construction with minimal impact on the surrounding area,” he added.

In addition to land acquisition, the project will involve moving underground electricity lines and addressing various technical feasibility concerns. The Chief Minister assured the public that the government is committed to this project and will review its progress monthly to ensure it stays on track.

However, several challenges could arise during the project’s implementation:

  • Land Acquisition: Securing the required land could be a major hurdle. Negotiating fair compensation with landowners may be a lengthy and complex process.
  • Impact on Local Businesses and Residents: The construction process might affect local businesses and residents, causing disruptions due to road closures or diversions.
  • Traffic Management: Managing traffic during construction will be challenging, with potential road closures leading to increased congestion on alternative routes.
  • Environmental Impact: The construction could negatively impact the environment, causing dust, noise pollution, and potential harm to local ecosystems.
  • Building and Infrastructure Damage: Construction activities could damage nearby buildings and infrastructure, raising concerns among residents.
  • Budget and Timeline Overruns: Large-scale projects like this often exceed their estimated budgets and timelines, leading to increased costs and delays.
  • Technical Challenges: Relocating underground utilities and ensuring structural safety could present additional technical difficulties.
  • Public Opposition: There could be varying opinions among the public, with some supporting the project and others opposing it, potentially causing delays.

The Assam government will need to carefully plan and engage with the community to address these challenges effectively and ensure the smooth progress of the flyover project.
