Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma vows not to let ‘Miya’ Muslims capture Assam amid a heated assembly debate over Upper Assam issues.
During a heated assembly debate, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that he would not allow ‘Miya’ Muslims to take over the state. The debate, sparked by recent demands from 27 organizations for Miya Muslims to leave Upper Assam, became intense when Opposition leaders suggested that Muslims would continue moving to Upper Assam.
Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, and Rafiqul Islam, the MLA of Janiya (Barpeta), stated that Muslims would go to Upper Assam, leading to a charged response from the Chief Minister. In response, CM Sarma said, “It means, you Miya Muslims will capture entire Assam? Well, I am telling you, we will not allow Miya Muslims to capture Assam.”
The statement from the Chief Minister came amid a backdrop of rising tensions and debates over demographic changes in Assam. The opposition parties accused the government of being biased and not taking action to protect minority communities. However, Sarma’s strong stance made it clear that his government would not tolerate any attempt to alter the state’s demographic balance.
The debate continued with both treasury and opposition members passionately arguing their points. The Speaker eventually had to adjourn the proceedings for 10 minutes to calm the situation.
This debate has highlighted the ongoing tensions around the issue of migration and demographic changes in Assam, with political leaders continuing to clash over the best course of action.
