Post-flooding in Shalchapra has submerged farmlands due to the sluice gate not being installed as promised, leading to a paralyzed drainage system.
Flooding in Shalchapra has left thousands of acres of farmland submerged. The issue stems from the Barak River dyke breaching, which caused significant waterlogging. Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika visited the site and promised swift action to repair the dyke and install a double-door sluice gate. However, the sluice gate has not been installed yet.
Local authorities temporarily addressed the problem by placing geo bags and geo tubes to stop further erosion. Despite these measures, the lack of a proper sluice gate has resulted in inadequate water drainage. As a result, fields remain waterlogged, severely damaging crops.
Residents and representatives from Starling NGO have voiced their concerns and criticized the local authorities for their inaction. They have called on the district magistrate of Cachar, Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take immediate action to resolve the situation and ensure that the sluice gate is installed promptly.
