Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered an FIR against USTM owner for allegedly using a false OBC caste certificate, amid past claims of “Flood Jihad.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj to file an FIR against Mahbubul Haque, the owner and Vice Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM). This decision follows allegations that Haque obtained a false OBC caste certificate.
The controversy began when it was revealed that Haque, a resident of Patharkandi, Karimganj, was issued an OBC caste certificate on August 24, 1992. However, a review of records showed that this certificate was canceled on August 20, 1996. Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav confirmed that the cancellation order is missing, but notes indicate that Haque’s certificate was withdrawn because he did not belong to the claimed community.
Sarma’s move to order the FIR underscores concerns about Haque’s credibility and the integrity of USTM. Sarma has questioned how someone engaged in such deceitful practices can lead an esteemed educational institution. This criticism extends beyond the issue of the fraudulent certificate.
The controversy also includes past claims of “Flood Jihad.” Sarma alleges that USTM’s construction activities, which involved deforestation, have worsened flooding in Guwahati. He argues that these developments have altered water flow patterns, worsening flood conditions in the city.
Additionally, Sarma has criticized the architectural design of USTM’s buildings, comparing it to Mecca. He argues that the design promotes undue religious symbolism and has called for the inclusion of diverse places of worship, such as a Naam Ghar and a Church, to ensure inclusivity.
As the investigation continues, Sarma accuses critics of undermining their own community and Assam’s future. The ongoing scrutiny of Haque’s practices and USTM’s role in recent controversies remains a focal point of public and political debate.
