Karimganj Civil Hospital is once again in the spotlight after a patient, Somnath Banik, died under controversial circumstances on Saturday evening.
The death has sparked fresh allegations of medical negligence against the hospital’s staff. Somnath Banik, a diabetic, was admitted to the hospital on the same day. His family alleges that Dr. Burhan Uddin Chowdhury initially denied admission but later administered saline and insulin. During the saline administration, Banik’s body shook, which was reportedly dismissed by the doctor as a normal reaction. The patient passed away just 10 minutes after treatment began.
The family’s accusations of negligence led to heightened tension within the hospital. In response to the unrest, Magistrate Rupak Majumdar intervened to manage the situation and restore order. Dr. Burhan Uddin Chowdhury has not yet responded to the allegations against him.
This incident has exacerbated concerns about the quality of care at Karimganj Civil Hospital, which has faced ongoing issues with patient deaths and alleged negligence. The local community is demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Banik’s death and the overall functioning of the hospital.
Following the event, police were deployed to control the situation and ensure safety. There are increasing calls for an investigation into both the specific allegations of negligence and the broader state of healthcare at Karimganj Civil Hospital.
