Karimganj faces severe flooding as the Longai River rises above danger levels, causing widespread damage and panic in affected areas.
Karimganj district is facing severe flooding. The water level in the Longai River is above the danger mark. In the Kachubari area, a river embankment has collapsed, flooding a large region of Patharkandi. A significant portion of a concrete bridge has also been washed away. Many villages are submerged, creating widespread panic among the residents.
At the beginning of the monsoon season, Patharkandi has been severely affected by the floods. Despite ongoing flooding earlier this year, continuous rainfall from last Sunday has caused the Longai River to rise above the danger level.
The river’s danger mark is 22 meters, but it has risen nearly 2 meters to 24.18 meters. As a result, a large section of the river embankment in Kachubari was washed away last night. Areas including Kolkolighat, Haribashar, Baithakhal, Kolkolibasti, Chandkhira, Dengarbond, and Hatikhira have all been inundated.
Local farmers are worried as their newly planted paddy seedlings are submerged. If the rain continues for another two days, the crops may rot, causing great concern for the farmers. Additionally, many vegetable gardens and fisheries have been damaged by the floods.
On Tuesday night, a major part of a concrete bridge, costing around 1.5 crore rupees, on the Longai River in the Jherjheri area of the Lowairpua block was swept away. There have been allegations of corruption in the construction of river embankments and bridges. Despite multiple complaints in the past, authorities and local leaders have not taken any action. As a result, local residents are suffering greatly.
