The bodies of Jaggu Kol and Anjana Kol, tea garden workers from Lediya Chara Tea Estate in Joypur, were recovered from Chiri River. The couple went missing last Saturday while bathing at Chiri River Ghat in Kamranga village. On Monday morning, locals from Kangali Basti under Sribar Gao Panchayat spotted two floating bodies in the river. They immediately informed the Lakhipur police, who arrived at the scene and started the recovery operation. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was also notified to assist.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Jaggu Kol and his wife Anjana Kol, day laborers from Joypur’s Lediyachara Tea Estate, had gone to bathe in the Chiri River after finishing their work on Saturday. Anjana slipped and fell into the river, and in an attempt to save her, Jaggu also drowned. Their bodies surfaced in the river two days later. The victims’ family members identified the bodies on-site, and they were subsequently sent to Silchar Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. The tragic incident of the poor couple’s death has caused widespread shock and grief in the area.
