A protest rally was held in Lakhipur, Cachar District, on Monday, over an alleged fake encounter by the Cachar Police. The Hmar community claims that three of their militants were killed unlawfully. The incident in question occurred last Wednesday when Cachar Police encountered three militants from the Hmar community at Bhuban Hill. The militants were initially arrested from an auto-rickshaw in Ganganagar, Dholai, the previous afternoon. Police recovered several sophisticated weapons, including AK-series rifles, from the vehicle.
According to police, during interrogation, the arrested militants revealed that additional weapons were stored at Bhuban Hill. While escorting the militants to the hill, other militants began firing, resulting in the deaths of the arrested militants and injuries to several police personnel. The militants were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
Police sources indicate that the three killed militants were affiliated with the Hmar People’s Convention Democratic (HPDC).
