Assam allocates ₹14 crore to repair 13-14 roads in Silchar before Durga Puja. CM says rain may delay works; drainage project also proposed.
The Assam government has allocated ₹14 crore to repair 13-14 roads in Silchar ahead of the Durga Puja festival. The repairs aim to make these roads suitable for vehicles and pedestrians. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that due to continuous rain during his visit to Silchar, the road repair work might be delayed. However, he expressed hope that the rains would stop soon so that the repair work could start before Durga Puja.
Among the planned repairs, a significant project is the construction of new drains on both sides of the road from Rangirkhari to Medical College. This proposal, which is yet to be approved, would cost an estimated ₹30 crore. If approved, this project would also involve the acquisition of land to widen the road. Currently, ₹5.5 crore has been allocated for the immediate repair of this road, which will be made vehicle-friendly before Durga Puja, with full completion expected after the festival.
On Shivbari Road in Tarapur, an RCC slab will be constructed to provide a permanent solution to the sinking zones. This slab will be supported by 400 piles and will include a river embankment underneath. This project has been allocated ₹70 crore, and the work is expected to start within the next ten days.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the NHIDCL (National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited) will undertake the repair of a 2.3-kilometer stretch from Capital Point to Rangirkhari. This project has a budget of ₹3.63 crore. A contractor has already been assigned for this work, and the contractor has assured the Chief Minister that the repairs will be completed before Durga Puja.
For the 6.5-kilometer road from Rangirkhari to Sonabari Ghat, ₹37 crore has been allocated under NHIDCL. Contractors for this project will be appointed within the next two to three days. The Chief Minister stated that efforts would be made to complete as much of this road repair as possible before Durga Puja, with full completion expected after the festival.
A separate project involves repairing an 8-kilometer stretch from Ramnagar to Rongpur, with a budget of ₹6.25 crore. A contractor has already been assigned, and the Chief Minister confirmed that the repair work will be completed before Durga Puja.
Additionally, an 18 crore estimate has been prepared for repairing the 28-kilometer road from Badarpur to Malidor. Tenders for this project will open on September 2, after which the road repair work will begin. The Chief Minister assured that this work would be completed shortly.
These road repair projects in Silchar are part of the Assam government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and reduce travel difficulties for the residents. While some projects face delays due to weather conditions, the government remains committed to completing them as soon as possible.
