Assam University student narrowly escaped an alleged kidnapping by an e-rickshaw driver in Silchar on Wednesday evening.
An Assam University student was allegedly kidnapped by an e-rickshaw driver in Silchar on Wednesday evening. The incident took place in the Shiv Colony area, creating panic among residents.
The student, originally from Karimganj and residing in a rented house in Subhash Nagar, commutes daily from her university to her home. After getting off the university bus at Rangirkhari Point, she typically takes an e-rickshaw to her residence. On Wednesday, she followed her usual routine, but things took a dangerous turn.
Due to the Chief Minister’s scheduled visit on Thursday, there was a heavy police presence in Silchar, especially in the evening, when traffic jams are common. The e-rickshaw driver, attempting to avoid traffic, took a route through Shiv Colony. Instead of turning right after crossing a bridge, the driver continued left into a deserted area. When the student asked the driver to stop, he accelerated instead.
Fortunately, the student pretended to talk to the police on her mobile phone, causing the driver to panic and abruptly stop. At the spot where the rickshaw stopped, an auto-rickshaw with a man and a woman was parked. They questioned the driver about where he was taking the student. The driver replied that he was heading towards Panchayat Road but seized the opportunity to flee.
A complaint was filed at the Rangirkhari police town outpost, but the student could not provide any details about the e-rickshaw or the driver, leading the police to not register a case, according to the university student who reported the incident.
