Congress protests erupted in Silchar during CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s review meeting, leading to the detention of former minister Ajit Singh and others.
Congress workers staged a protest in Silchar during Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit on Saturday. The protest took place near the statue of Khudiram Bose on Club Road while the Chief Minister was attending a review meeting.
Congress members, holding placards and banners, shouted slogans demanding various actions, including road repairs in Silchar, municipal elections, and the cancellation of smart electricity meters. The protest highlighted the dissatisfaction among locals over the state government’s development plans and their implementation.
Abhijit Paul, the district president of Congress, accused the government of neglecting the Barak Valley in terms of development. He claimed that despite frequent visits by the Chief Minister and announcements of new projects, none of them have been implemented. Paul also raised concerns about the poor condition of the Badarpur-Jowai road, which is an important corridor for Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
During the protest, former minister Ajit Singh and several Congress workers were detained by the police and commando forces. The demonstration reflected growing frustration with the government’s handling of local issues in Silchar.
