Senior doctors joined the strike at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, protesting the Kolkata doctor rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In Silchar, the protest against the gang rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata RG Kar Medical College has intensified. Junior doctors at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, who began an indefinite strike earlier, were joined by senior doctors and trainee nurses on Saturday.
From morning until 2 PM, protesters held a sit-in and demonstration in front of the OPD. The third day of protests saw hundreds of participation from junior and senior doctors, as well as trainee nurses.
Protesters raised critical questions about the lack of justice for the Kolkata incident, asking why no action has been taken against the perpetrators despite the passing of days. They expressed concerns about the safety of medical professionals, questioning how the public can expect proper healthcare if doctors are not safe.
The protestors also criticized both central and state governments for failing to ensure the safety of healthcare workers, despite having substantial security forces at their disposal.
Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Principal of Silchar Medical College, along with Superintendent Dr. Debakumar Chakraborty, ENT Department Head Dr. Smriti Dutta Bora, and Chest and Medicine Department doctor Dr. Alok Chakraborty, participated in the protest. They called for a high-level investigation into the Kolkata incident and demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits to prevent such incidents in the future.
