Silchar Doctors Protest Kolkata Rape-Murder with Vigils

Junior doctors lead candlelight vigils and performances, demanding justice and better safety for medical professionals.

Silchar Medical College doctors protest with plays and candle vigils, condemning the rape-murder case of a doctor at Kolkata RG Kar Medical College.

In a strong show of solidarity, doctors from Silchar Medical College and Hospital staged a day-long protest in response to the recent rape murder case of Kolkata RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This marked the fourth day of their protest, which included various activities such as street plays, music performances, and chanting of slogans throughout the day at the statue of Khudiram Bose on Club Road.

The evening concluded with a candlelight vigil led by junior doctors from Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The protest saw participation from senior doctors, including Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Dr. Rajeev Biswas, Dr Deepak Pandey, Dr. konakdeep Sharma, Dr salma Chowdhury, among others.

During the protest, the doctors called for a high-level investigation into the incident and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice to prevent such occurrences in the future. They also emphasized the need for improved security for healthcare professionals at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

In a statement to the media, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, the principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, strongly condemned the incident at RG Kar Medical College. He acknowledged that while some demands of the junior doctors’ association have been met, others will require more time. Dr. Gupta assured that the ongoing protest did not disrupt medical services at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, and no patients or senior doctors were obstructed from accessing the hospital during the demonstration.
