Silchar lawyers rally, demanding harsh penalties in the RG Kar Medical rape and murder case, while calling for strict justice and enhanced safety for women.
In a strong protest against the gang rape and murder of a female doctor, lawyers held a march from the district court. Members of the district bar association, both male and female, joined the rally to demand severe punishment for the accused.
Senior lawyer Bithika Acharya condemned the brutal crime at RG Kar Medical College, calling it one of the most heinous acts. She urged that all those responsible be given the harshest penalties.
Lawyer Susmita Purkayastha highlighted that the incident has forced citizens across India to speak out. She said it has pressured both state and central governments to focus on women’s safety. Purkayastha stressed the need for the government to enforce strict punishments in line with the Indian Constitution and ensure such horrific crimes do not happen again.
The protest march began at Silchar Court, passed through the city’s Nahata Point and Janiganj, and concluded back at the court premises.
