The unauthorized road digging for the AMRUT water supply scheme in Silchar has led to serious safety concerns and frequent accidents. The Public Works Department (PWD) has issued a threat of FIR and ordered an immediate halt to the ongoing road digging. The work, conducted by the Urban Water Supply & Sewerage Board and its contractor without proper NOC or adherence to safety guidelines, has caused numerous issues in the Park Road area.
The digging lacks essential safety measures such as warning signs and ribbons, resulting in several accidents. In response to these violations, the PWD has demanded the Urban Water Supply & Sewerage Board stop further digging and restore the roads. On Tuesday, the Additional Chief Engineer of PWD called a meeting with the board’s officials and the contractor, but only an Assistant Engineer attended, and the contractor was absent.
The Additional Chief Engineer questioned the Assistant Engineer about the NOC and compliance with PWD norms but received no clear answers. The PWD also raised concerns about the contractor’s authorization and infrastructure. The board has been asked to submit all project documents, including contractor details, and warned that further unauthorized digging will lead to legal action against the contractor and workers.
Local Businessman and the Park Road Progressive Union have also expressed their dissatisfaction. Arindam Dutta the GS Progressive Union urges for proper road restoration. Despite assurances, little progress has been made, leaving safety concerns unresolved.
