With the onset of rain, a landslide at the Sonapur area of the Silchar-Meghalaya National Highway on Saturday evening resulted in vehicles stuck in it.
The landslide on Saturday evening causes a huge traffic jam because the vehicles were stuck. Night supers from Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi also had to be parked for the poor road condition after the landslide. On Saturday evening after the landslide, Meghalaya police issued an alert for the travellers to drive cautiously through the affected road. The affected road gets cleared by Sunday morning.
The Sonapur tunnel becomes a deadly adventure-like thing for every Silchar-Guwahati traveller in every monsoon. Recently, on May 27 the same incident takes place and, sadly, within 15 days it is the 2nd landslide happened in the same spot.
Silchar-Guwahati travellers will get relaxed if they can skip the Sonapur part in monsoons on Silchar-Meghalaya road and have ‘Mahasadak’ completed as an alternative. Thus the present government has to lay more focus on completing the alternative road for the Silchar Guwahati route. Though the ‘Mahasadak’ has initiated in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s time still it is far to complete.
