Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express Derails: Special Train to Take Passengers Home to Assam

A tragic train accident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed near Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. The train, travelling from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh in Assam, went off the tracks around 2:30 pm.

Initial reports caused confusion regarding the number of casualties. However, authorities have confirmed that four passengers lost their lives in the accident. More than 20 passengers were injured, with some requiring hospitalization. Thankfully, all passengers have been evacuated and received medical attention.

A high-level investigation is underway to determine the cause of the derailment. The loco pilot reported hearing a loud noise just before the incident. Relief teams, including NDRF and SDRF personnel, worked tirelessly throughout the night to ensure everyone’s safety.
The accident has disrupted train services on the route.

Authorities are working diligently to clear the tracks and resume normal operations as soon as possible. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed no casualties from his state and said teams are on standby to assist those affected. The Northeast Frontier Railway has arranged a special train to transport stranded passengers to Dibrugarh.

Ex-Gratia Support for Affected Families:
In a gesture of support, the Ministry of Railways announced an ex-gratia compensation package for the families impacted by this tragedy.
The kin of each deceased passenger will receive ₹10 lakh.
Passengers who suffered serious injuries will be compensated with ₹2.5 lakh.
Those with minor injuries will receive ₹50,000.
