Key dates and rules are now public. Ballot papers will be used for voting. The election will cover 27 districts.
The official notification will be issued on Thursday. Nomination filing ends on April 11th. Scrutiny of papers is on April 12th. Candidates can withdraw by April 17th. The final list comes out after 3 PM on April 17th. Over 1.80 crore voters will cast their ballots. There are 25,007 polling stations.
Gaon Panchayat members will contest without party symbols. This makes the polls at the village level apolitical. However, Anchalik Panchayat and Zilla Parishad elections will have party-affiliated candidates.
To contest, candidates must be 21 years old. They need a functional toilet and must declare it. They should not have violated marriage age laws. Those with more than two children born after March 2018 are not eligible. Education rules also apply. Gaon Panchayat candidates need to have studied till Class 10. For Anchalik and Zilla Parishad, the minimum is Class 12, with some relaxation for reserved categories.
The Panchayat elections were delayed from last year due to a delimitation process and court cases. Around 1.20 lakh personnel will manage the elections. Security will also be in place.
