In a swift action underscoring the government’s strict stance on online misconduct, Cachar Police have detained a retired school headmaster for a controversial social media comment related to the recent blast near the Red Fort in Delhi. The individual, identified as Nazrul Islam Borbhuiya, faces questioning over his attempt to allegedly “politicise” a national tragedy.
The Controversial Post
Nazrul Islam Borbhuiya, a resident of Durgapur in Cachar district and a retired headmaster of Banshkandi NMHS school, was apprehended on Tuesday, November 11, after his post sparked widespread outrage.
- Accused: Nazrul Islam Borbhuiya
- Location of Arrest: Cachar District, Assam
- The Comment: Borbhuiya allegedly posted the terse phrase “Election is coming” on a social media platform in response to news of the Delhi explosion.
Police officials stated that the comment was deemed an unwarranted politicisation of an incident of national concern and had the potential to create communal divisions and provoke tension.
Police Statement and State-Wide Crackdown
Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Rajat Kumar Pal, confirmed the detention, noting that efforts are underway to determine the individual’s motivation. “Some people are trying to misuse and politicise this news, which can lead to serious repercussions. We have apprehended the person and are questioning him,” Pal told the media.
This detention aligns with a directive from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intensify the crackdown across Assam on individuals making inflammatory or objectionable remarks regarding the Delhi blast. The Chief Minister had previously warned that anyone attempting to give a “political angle” or celebrate the tragedy would face severe legal action.
Heightened Scrutiny on Social Media
The incident highlights the increased scrutiny being placed on social media commentary during times of national crisis. Authorities are actively monitoring online platforms to prevent the spread of provocative narratives, misinformation, or content that could incite disharmony.
The case serves as a stern reminder that remarks made on social media, even seemingly brief ones, are not beyond the purview of the law if they are interpreted as a deliberate attempt to undermine public order or national sentiment. Interrogation of Borbhuiya is ongoing to ascertain whether the comment was a personal bias or influenced by external factors.
