CM Sarma Sounds Alarm: 22 Arrested Across Assam for Glorifying Delhi Blast; Warns of Security Threat

Assam Police Nab 22 Across 16 Districts for 'Glorifying Terror'; CM Sarma Warns State Faces Prolonged Threat from External Elements,

Assam Police has launched a massive, state-wide crackdown, arresting 22 individuals for allegedly posting objectionable and provocative content on social media in connection with the recent deadly blast near the Red Fort in Delhi. The sweeping arrests across 16 districts came hours after Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered security forces to act “swiftly and firmly” against anyone promoting hatred or supporting terror.

The Chief Minister, in a significant statement, linked the crackdown to a broader security concern, warning that Assam faces a difficult situation due to its volatile borders.

The Crackdown: 22 Arrested Across 16 Districts
The arrests target individuals who welcomed the Delhi incident or posted derogatory comments and happy emojis, which the police view as a direct endorsement of terrorism. The high numbers underscore the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards online radicalization and extremism.

Following the widespread crackdown, Assam Police arrested a total of 22 individuals across 16 districts for posting provocative content on social media. The district-wise breakdown of arrests is as follows:

  • 5 arrests: Kamrup
  • 4 arrests: Barpeta
  • 3 arrests: Darang, Nalbari, and Bongaigaon
  • 2 arrests: Sunitpur, Golaghat, Goalpara, South Salmara, and Hojai
  • 1 arrest each: Tamulpur, Kamrup Metro, Karbi Anglong, Jorhat, Cachar, and Baksa

This data confirms a comprehensive, state-wide operation targeting individuals who welcomed or glorified the recent terror incident.

The arrests include five individuals initially named by the CM on X (Mattiur Rahman, Hassan Ali Mondal, Abdul Latif, Wajhul Kamal, and Nur Amin Ahmed), along with others across various districts.

CM’s Stark Warning on Security
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a stern warning, linking the social media crackdown to the state’s vulnerable security situation. The Chief Minister hinted at demographic challenges and the threat of cross-border infiltration as contributing factors to the security risk.

“We are in a difficult situation in Assam. They (terror elements) can enter here and do anything because they are huge in percentage. So, Assam will have to be careful for a long time,” CM Sarma stated.

He further cautioned against complacency, adding: “Whenever it will happen here in Assam, it will be a major blast.”

Strict Action for External Links
The Chief Minister reiterated that all individuals who welcomed the Delhi blast will face prosecution under strict anti-terror laws. He emphasized that the consequences will be far more severe if links to external groups are established:

“If they are found involved with Bangladesh or such activity then more tough action will be taken.”

The Assam Police are currently scrutinizing the digital footprints of the arrested individuals to trace any connections to organized terror modules or handlers outside the state. The massive crackdown serves as a strong signal that the Assam government will not permit its territory to be used to promote or glorify acts of terrorism.
