The Barak Valley Development Department opened a new office in Silchar on July 1, 2025, marking a major step toward accelerating Barak Valley development. Minister Kaushik Rai inaugurated the temporary office at the historic Old Circuit House.
The event drew prominent attendees, including Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha and several MLAs. Their presence showed a strong political push for rapid progress in the region.
Minister Rai said the office would bring transparency and speed to development work. He emphasized that completing projects on time is now a priority. The goal is to close development gaps and bring governance closer to the people of Cachar, Karimganj (Sribhumi), and Hailakandi. This approach promises inclusive and efficient Barak Valley development.
The department will focus on improving key areas like rural roads, healthcare, drinking water, and education. These efforts will directly improve the quality of life for local residents. Along with infrastructure, the department is planning cultural events to strengthen the region’s identity. A grand Dhamail Dance Festival is scheduled for December 2025 in Silchar. A three-day Barak Festival is planned for January 2026 in Guwahati.
Major infrastructure projects are already underway. A new Barak Valley Secretariat building, a second medical college in Sribhumi, and an upgraded hospital wing at Silchar Medical College are in progress. Another critical project is a new express highway connecting Barak Valley to Guwahati. This road will reduce travel time and boost economic growth.
Recently, Minister Rai led a high-level meeting to review development projects worth over ₹22,000 crore. He focused on removing delays and ensuring smooth use of funds.
With strong leadership and a clear action plan, the department’s new office is set to become a powerful tool for fast and effective Barak Valley development.
