Barak River Erosion Threatens Hundreds of Families in Cachar; Locals Brand MLA as “Failed Representative”

Date:

A serious crisis has unfolded in the Dakshin Buribail area within the Borkhola Assembly constituency of Cachar district, where aggressive erosion by the Barak River is threatening the lives and livelihoods of over three hundred families. Large sections of the only connecting road for this vast locality have been swallowed by the river’s relentless current, forcing residents to traverse dangerous, eroded pathways at great personal risk.

Erosion Causes Extreme Hardship and Risk
The erosion has led to extreme hardship for the wider community. Students commuting to schools and colleges, as well as general residents, are risking their lives daily to cross the precarious sections of the road that border the collapsing riverbank.

Despite the severe and immediate danger, local residents state there has been no intervention or even inquiry from the local representative, MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar.

MLA Faces “Failed” Tag Ahead of Election
With the 2026 Assembly elections looming, the sitting MLA, a Congress leader, is reportedly gearing up for re-election campaigns in Borkhola. However, his absence during this major crisis has led the erosion-affected people of Buribail to unequivocally label him a “failed representative.”

Residents recall his promises made during the last election: He assured them that if elected, he would solve the chronic river erosion problem in the Buribail area.

Today, locals state that not only is the erosion problem far from solved, but the MLA himself is virtually unreachable.

Heartbreaking Accusations of Neglect
An elderly resident of the area articulated the depth of the community’s disillusionment, suggesting that their repeated voting for Mr. Laskar, allegedly based on his ‘minority welfare rhetoric,’ has only resulted in a mountain of problems and the destruction of their lives.

The senior resident expressed a heartbreaking sense of fatalism regarding the MLA’s ability to solve the crisis:

“We have no hope left that MLA Misbahul Islam will solve the river erosion problem. We are now simply waiting to be buried in the graves right next to the collapsing riverbank.”

The situation underscores a critical failure of political representation in the constituency, with the crisis likely to become a central issue as the 2026 elections draw near. The community is now demanding immediate government intervention to prevent a humanitarian and infrastructural disaster.
