Lakhipur, Assam: A massive and coordinated joint operation has struck a severe blow to the international drug trade, resulting in the seizure of 6.16 kilograms of high-grade heroin with an estimated market value of ₹12.5 crore.
The successful action was conducted by a team from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Guwahati Zonal Unit in collaboration with the 147 Battalion (BN) of the CRPF based in Kashipur, Silchar, and Assam Police.
Operation at Fulertal Ferry Ghat
Acting on specific intelligence regarding a new trafficking strategy exploiting the riverine network, the joint team tracked a consignment suspected to have originated in Myanmar and routed through the dense forest corridors of Manipur. The drugs were being transported via the Barak River to evade fixed police checkpoints.
On the night of the operation, the team successfully intercepted an indigenous motorboat at the Fulertal Ferry Ghat in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district. A detailed search of the vessel revealed the heroin meticulously packaged inside 530 soap cases—a notorious tactic used by cartels to mask the scent of the narcotic.
Arrests and Investigation
The 6.16 kg consignment was immediately seized, and two individuals were apprehended on the spot:
- Jacob Hmar
- Melody Hmar
Both arrested individuals are reported to be residents of the Cachar district. Authorities confirmed that the operation has effectively dismantled a key component of the international drug trafficking network operating across the Myanmar–Manipur–Assam corridor. The traffickers specifically utilized the water route to bypass urban surveillance and security camps.
The arrested individuals, along with the seized contraband, have been handed over for legal proceedings and further investigation under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
