AFSPA Extended in Assam and Northeast States

AFSPA remains enforced in 'disturbed areas' amid debates

AFSPA has been extended for 6 months in parts of Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam due to security concerns.

AFSPA has been extended for six months in parts of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, effective from April 1, 2025, due to ongoing security concerns. In Assam, the act will apply to three districts: Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Sivasagar, while being withdrawn from Dibrugarh district. Similar extensions have been made in Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, with specific regions identified as “disturbed areas.”

The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is a law enacted by the Indian Parliament that grants special powers to the armed forces in regions classified as “disturbed areas.” These powers include conducting searches, arrests, and the use of force without prior warrants to maintain public order and security. AFSPA is currently enforced in specific areas of northeastern states like Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. It is also partially in force in Jammu and Kashmir.

The government’s decision to extend AFSPA reflects concerns over ongoing militant activities, such as IED planting and kidnappings. While the law plays a role in addressing security challenges, it remains controversial, with human rights groups criticizing its potential for misuse.
