Breaking News: Three NIT Silchar Students Drown at Harangajao Waterfall

Shock at NIT Silchar as three first‑year students drown at Harangajao Waterfall; police probe underway in Dima Hasao.

A tragic incident unfolded today at the scenic Harangajao Waterfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, where three first‑year students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, drowned.

The Incident
According to eyewitness accounts, a group of students had gone to visit the waterfall when three of them were swept away by the strong currents while bathing. Despite immediate rescue attempts by locals, the students could not be saved.

Official Response
NIT Silchar Director told Northeast Update that the victims were all first‑year students. He further revealed that some students first informed him about the accident, following which the institute authorities quickly contacted the Harangajao police.

The Director also confirmed that an official delegation from NIT Silchar has already left for the site to coordinate with local authorities and provide support.

Police Action
Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen stated that, under the instructions of Cachar Police, a team from Harangajao Police Station rushed to the spot to take charge of the situation. The bodies have been recovered and sent for post‑mortem examination.

Campus Reaction
News of the tragedy spread rapidly across the NIT Silchar campus, creating shock and unrest among students and faculty. The institute has assured full cooperation with the police investigation and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

About Harangajao Waterfall
Harangajao Waterfall, located near Bolosam village in Dima Hasao district, is about 38 km from Haflong and approximately 50 km from Silchar. Surrounded by lush greenery and hills, the waterfall is a lesser‑known but picturesque destination in Northeast India.

Current Status
As of now, the identities of the deceased students have not been officially confirmed. Police investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected soon.
