Cachar District Celebrates National Press Day, Calls for Responsible Journalism

National Press Day was observed with due solemnity and significance in Cachar district, organized jointly by the Cachar District Administration and the Silchar Information and Public Relations Department. A detailed discussion on the critical role, challenges, and future prospects of journalism was held at the District Administration Office, emphasizing the media’s essential function as the fourth pillar of democracy.

The event was graced by Mridul Yadav, the District Commissioner (DC) of Cachar, who attended as the Chief Guest. Special Guests included Professor Dr. Charbak, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Assam University and among other prominent personalities.

DC Mridul Yadav Emphasizes Media’s Accountability
In his address, DC Mridul Yadav underscored the immense importance of National Press Day, calling upon the media to adopt an even more responsible and constructive role as the fourth pillar of society.

“The role of the media in a democratic society is immeasurable,” stated DC Yadav. “It is only through transparency of information and the delivery of reliable news that the construction of an advanced society becomes possible.” He urged media professionals to recognize their profound duty in shaping public discourse and maintaining societal health.

Experts Discuss Digital Future and Ethical Responsibility
Adding an academic perspective to the discussion, Professor Dr. Charbak from Assam University spoke extensively on the modernization of media and its rapid digital expansion. He specifically focused on the moral and ethical responsibilities that rest upon the shoulders of the younger generation of journalists in the digital age.

Taimur Raja Choudhury also extended his gratitude to the media personnel on National Press Day. He acknowledged that despite numerous operational challenges, journalists remain steadfast in their pursuit of truth and justice, thereby keeping society informed and aware.

The proceedings concluded with a felicitation ceremony where the District Administration honored representatives from various media outlets across the district. Distinguished members of the press community, including editors, reporters, and photographers from local print and electronic media, were present at the function.
