Century Miss, Mammoth Win: 13th Inter-College Cricket Tournament Kicks Off at Assam University

Date:

The 13th Inter-College Cricket Tournament roared into action today, November 16, 2025, amidst high spirits and competitive fervor at the picturesque Assam University (AU) Cricket Grounds. Organised by the Assam University Sports Board, the opening day witnessed two commanding victories that immediately set a high standard for the week-long competition.

Inauguration and Dignitaries
The tournament was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant. He was joined by key officials, including Prof. Himadri Sekhar Das (Director in-charge, Sports Board), Dr. Ajita Tiwari, Dr. Lalzo S. Thangzom, Shri Niranjan Das, and Dr. Siddhartha Sarma (Assistant Director, Sports Board). Their presence, alongside an enthusiastic crowd of fans and supporters, underscored the importance of college sports in fostering a healthy competitive environment.

Assam University Dominates Home Ground Clash
The inaugural match pitted the host Assam University team against Nehru College. After Nehru College won the toss and opted to field, the home team unleashed a relentless batting attack.

Muzammil Hussain was the star of the show, delivering a spectacular knock of 99 runs off just 43 deliveries, narrowly missing a century but setting an imposing total. Assam University finished their innings with a massive 252 for 7 wickets in 20 overs. Abhijit Deb of Nehru College was the top bowler for his side, claiming three wickets for 44 runs.

The chase proved too steep for Nehru College, who were bundled out for just 141 runs in 18.3 overs. The host team’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Abrarul Haque and Subhajit Paul, who took three wickets each, secured a resounding 111-run victory for Assam University. Muzammil Hussain was rightly named the Man of the Match for his scintillating performance, positioning AU as a strong title contender.

Cachar College Registers Emphatic Win
The excitement continued in the second fixture, where Cachar College faced MHCM Science College. Cachar College won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a challenging score of 186 runs in their 20 overs, with contributions from Mandip Roy and Pritam Biswas.

MHCM College struggled against a fierce bowling performance and were bowled out for a mere 105 runs. The top-order collapse was orchestrated by Rituraj Das of Cachar College, who claimed four wickets for 37 runs in his spell. Cachar College ultimately secured a significant 81-run victory, showcasing their own cricketing prowess.

The successful opening day has highlighted the high level of sportsmanship and competitive spirit among the affiliated colleges. The tournament action is scheduled to continue throughout the week at the University Cricket Grounds, promising more exhilarating matches in the days to come.
