Double Blow for Barak Valley: BJP Stalwarts Kabindra Purkayastha and Jogendra Kumar Sinha Pass Away on Same Day

Date:

Silchar, Assam | In a poignant and historic coincidence that has left the political fraternity of Northeast India in deep mourning, two of the region’s most influential saffron leaders—former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha and veteran RSS-BJP mentor Jogendra Kumar Sinha—passed away on the same day.

The departure of these two lifelong companions within hours of each other is being seen as the final symbolic exit of the “Founding Generation” that established the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Barak Valley.

Companions in Ideology and Struggle
While Kabindra Purkayastha (94) was the parliamentary face of the movement, serving as a three-time MP and a Union Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Jogendra Kumar Sinha was the silent organizational engine.

  • The RSS Foundation: Both leaders joined the RSS in the early 1950s, a time when the ideology faced significant resistance in the Northeast. They worked in tandem to establish the first Shakhas in Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi.
  • The MISA Connection: During the 1975 Emergency, both were instrumental in organizing the underground resistance. While Purkayastha was arrested under MISA and spent 16 months in jail, Sinha played a crucial role in maintaining the organizational supply lines and supporting the families of detained karyakartas.

A Shared Vision for Barak Valley
The duo was inseparable in their mission to bring the Barak Valley into the national mainstream. Purkayastha focused on “Mahasadak” (the East-West Corridor) and Broad Gauge railway connectivity in the corridors of power in Delhi, while Sinha ensured that the party’s grassroots base remained unshakable.

Local observers often remarked that while Purkayastha was the “Voice,” Sinha was the “Vision” that kept the local units disciplined and ideologically grounded.

State Mourning and Tributes
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his profound grief at the dual loss, stating, “The passing of Kabindra Purkayastha Ji and Jogendra Kumar Sinha Ji on the same day is a heartbreaking moment for the state. They were the two pillars on which the edifice of the BJP in Assam was built. Their life was a masterclass in dedication to the motherland.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also acknowledged the combined legacy, noting that their synchronized departure feels like the closing of a chapter of selfless service that transformed the political destiny of the Northeast.

The final rites for both leaders will be performed in Silchar on January 8 with Full State Honours, as thousands of followers are expected to gather to pay their last respects to the “Duo of the Century.”
