Silchar, Assam | Northeast Update The long-standing dream of Silchar residents for a traffic-free city is moving closer to reality. In a significant announcement following the English New Year, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty confirmed that the proposed Elevated Corridor (Flyover) project has received the green light from the state cabinet, with necessary funds already sanctioned.
Government Committed to Infrastructure Growth
Addressing the media, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty emphasized that the flyover is a necessity for the people of Silchar to combat the city’s escalating traffic woes. He stated that Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is personally monitoring the project to ensure its successful implementation.
“The Cabinet has already taken the decision and funds are allocated. The construction of the Silchar Flyover is certain,” the MLA asserted, clearing all doubts regarding the project’s future.
Scientific Planning & Survey Reports
Responding to concerns raised by a section of local traders regarding the pillar placements from Devdoot Point to Premtola, Chakraborty clarified that the project is based on expert technical evaluations. Detailed survey reports have already been submitted by premier agencies RITES and L&T. These reports take into account the city’s geography and future traffic load to ensure a sustainable solution.
A Call for Public Cooperation and Sacrifice
Development often comes with temporary challenges. The MLA acknowledged that the anti-encroachment drive required for the flyover might affect some businesses, with some buildings potentially facing partial demolition.
Invoking the example of Tarapur residents, who cooperated during the eviction drive for the Ramnagar to Capital Point stretch, Chakraborty urged the citizens of Silchar to look at the “bigger picture.” He reassured the public that:
- Adequate Compensation: Every individual or business owner affected by the eviction will receive fair compensation as per government norms.
- Public Goodwill: The Chief Minister desires the project to be completed with the goodwill of the people, rather than through conflict.
Foundation Stone in February 2026
While the local administration initially aimed for a January start, the foundation stone laying ceremony is now scheduled for February 2026. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to visit Silchar to officially kick off the construction.
The Silchar Flyover is expected to be a game-changer for the Cachar district, streamlining connectivity and boosting the local economy by reducing transit time within the town.
