A youth has been arrested in Silchar for his alleged involvement in a case of sexual extortion, where he reportedly blackmailed a housewife by threatening to publish private photographs.
The accused, identified as Rajat Das, who is also known by his alias ‘Manna’, was apprehended by police following a complaint lodged by the victim.
The Alleged Extortion Tactic
The shocking incident came to light after the victim, a housewife residing in the Kanakpur area of Silchar, lodged an official complaint.
According to police sources, the accused allegedly obtained or took nude photographs of the victim and subsequently used them as a tool for sexual extortion. It is alleged that Das repeatedly threatened the woman with the public release of these private and compromising images if she did not comply with his demands.
The continuous harassment and intimidation prompted the victim to approach the authorities.
Arrest Made Under Rangirkhari Police
The case falls under the jurisdiction of the Rangirkhari Police Town Outpost. After investigating the complaint and gathering initial evidence, the police launched an operation to apprehend the accused.
Rajat Das @ Manna was successfully taken into custody by the Rangirkhari police team. He is currently being interrogated regarding the exact circumstances under which the photographs were obtained and the nature of the extortion demands.
Police have reportedly registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to sexual harassment, extortion, and cybercrime (given the nature of the photographs).
The incident has highlighted the growing risk of cyber-related crimes and sexual extortion targeting women in the region. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any attempts at blackmail or harassment immediately.
