A massive accident shook the Sadarghat area of Silchar this morning when a heavy vehicle belonging to the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) lost control and plunged straight into the Barak River. The vehicle, identified as a ‘Super Sucker’ truck, was registered under the number AS-11/EC-8898.
Horrific Accident at Bisharjan Ghat
The incident occurred near the Bisharjan Ghat (immersion site) at Sadarghat. According to preliminary reports, the driver had taken the Super Sucker vehicle—which is crucial for civic sanitation work—to the riverbank for a wash this morning.
Sources indicate that while maneuvering the heavy vehicle close to the water’s edge, the driver suddenly lost control. The truck rolled forward and submerged into the turbulent waters of the Barak River.
Driver’s Narrow Escape
Despite the horrific nature of the accident, the driver of the SMC vehicle managed a miraculous escape. He somehow succeeded in getting out of the rapidly sinking truck and swimming to safety, suffering only minor injuries. Locals rushed to the spot immediately after hearing the loud splash.
Police Investigation and Mystery Deepens
The news of the disaster quickly reached the authorities. Police promptly arrived at the scene to secure the area and assess the situation.
However, a sense of mystery surrounds the true cause of the accident. While preliminary reports point to a loss of control, the exact reasons why the driver failed to secure the large, heavy-duty vehicle remain under investigation. Authorities are focusing on whether the cause was mechanical failure, human error, or a sudden slippery embankment.
The immediate priority for the municipal corporation is the recovery operation of the expensive and essential Super Sucker vehicle from the riverbed.
