12 Years Rigorous Imprisonment for Smuggling 404 kg Cannabis

Sribhumi, Assam: In a strong message against drug trafficking, the Sribhumi District and Sessions Judge Court on Monday sentenced two individuals to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for smuggling a massive consignment of cannabis.

District and Sessions Judge ASB Laskar delivered the verdict, also imposing a substantial fine of ₹1.5 lakh on each of the convicted persons. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of simple imprisonment.

Details of the Conviction
The two convicted drug traffickers have been identified as:

  • Sujan Mia, from Sonamura area in Sepahijala district of Tripura.
  • Imdadul Haque, from Sonapur village in the same district.

The case dates back to the night of November 11, 2022, when a police search operation was conducted at Churaibari, the entry point to Assam from Tripura. Police intercepted a truck bearing registration number TR 01 B 1747 and recovered a huge consignment of illegal drugs.

The search led to the discovery of approximately 69 packets of cannabis (Ganja), with a total weight of 404 kilograms.

Following the court’s judgment, Public Prosecutor M.L. Koiri briefed the media on the extensive details of the case, highlighting the successful prosecution under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The severe sentence underscores the judiciary’s commitment to combating cross-border drug smuggling in the region.
