A government doctor in Sribhumi, Assam, has been arrested for involvement in a life insurance fraud case. Dr. Shirsendu Roy was taken into custody on Friday and presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Karimganj.
The case began in 2017 with the death of a child named Mahmudul Haque. After the child’s passing, his father, Taj Uddin, obtained a ₹70 lakh life insurance policy in the child’s name. However, in 2024, Dr. Shirsendu Roy falsely certified that the child had died recently and even stated that he had provided medical treatment to the deceased at Lakhipur Primary Health Centre.
Police began investigating after fraud allegations surfaced. Taj Uddin was initially detained, followed by the arrest of Dr. Shirsendu Roy. The case has raised critical questions about how a deceased child was issued a substantial life insurance policy and whether individuals from the insurance company were involved in the scheme.
The incident has shocked the local community, and authorities are conducting a detailed investigation to uncover the full extent of the fraud.
