Assam Launches 4 Crore Barak River Erosion Control Project at Binnakandi Ghat Introduction

Date:

Lakhipur, Cachar: In a major step toward a permanent solution to riverbank erosion in the Barak Valley, the Assam government on Monday laid the foundation stone for a ₹4 crore erosion control project at Binnakandi Ghat. The project, located in Lakhipur constituency of Cachar district, aims to protect vulnerable riverbanks along the Barak River.

The foundation stone was laid by Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika during a public ceremony attended by senior leaders and officials.

What is the Binnakandi Ghat erosion control project?

The project focuses on preventing erosion caused by the Barak River, which has long threatened homes, farmland, and infrastructure in the region. Officials said the work will strengthen embankments and stabilize the riverbank using modern engineering methods.

Once completed, the project is expected to safeguard Binnakandi Ghat and surrounding areas from recurring flood-related damage.

Ministers review plans, address public meeting

Lakhipur MLA and state minister Kaushik Rai was present alongside Pijush Hazarika at the event. After unveiling the project plaque, the ministers addressed a large public gathering.

Engineers from the Water Resources Department and other dignitaries briefed the audience on future plans and ongoing initiatives to control river erosion across the Barak Valley.

Minister rejects geo-bag syndicate allegations

Speaking to the media, Pijush Hazarika firmly rejected opposition allegations of a syndicate in the supply of geo-bags used for erosion control. He said that earlier only three companies supplied geo-bags, while now as many as 15 companies are involved.

According to the minister, increased competition has ensured transparency, leaving no scope for unethical practices in procurement.

Government highlights embankment construction record

Responding to criticism from opposition parties, Hazarika claimed the current BJP-led government has significantly outperformed previous administrations in embankment construction. He said earlier governments built around 4,000 km of embankments over 60 years.

In contrast, he claimed the present government has constructed over 1,000 km of embankments in just five years, setting a new benchmark in flood and erosion management.

Conclusion

With the launch of the ₹4 crore Binnakandi Ghat project, the Assam government has renewed hopes for thousands of residents affected by Barak River erosion. If implemented as planned, the initiative could mark a turning point in protecting livelihoods and land in one of Assam’s most erosion-prone regions.
