Silchar, Assam: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took a firm stance against the opposition to the proposed Silchar Flyover construction, stating unequivocally that the project will only move forward with the complete backing of the local population.
Speaking at a large cheque distribution ceremony under the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan’ (MMUA) held at Borjalenga Pioneer Sangha Ground in the Dholai constituency on Saturday, the Chief Minister delivered a clear message.
Flyover Construction is Conditional
Addressing the long-standing demand for the flyover in Silchar, CM Sarma stated, “The flyover construction will happen only if the public wants it; it will not proceed if there is opposition.”
He called upon all citizens to support the project for the sake of development, emphasizing that his government seeks to avoid controversy and that development is the state government’s primary commitment. He confirmed that the flyover was approved specifically in consideration of the long-pending demands of the Barak Valley residents and construction would start soon after public support is secured.
Empowering Women to Become ‘Lakhpati Baideus’
During the event, the CM personally handed over ₹10,000 initial grant checks to nearly 20,099 women under the MMUA scheme.
He further elaborated on the tiered structure of the financial assistance:
- If women successfully establish their businesses using the initial grant, they will be eligible for subsequent support of ₹25,000 and later ₹50,000.
- The ultimate goal of the government, he stated, is to transform every woman in the state into a ‘Lakhpati Baideu’ (a sister earning ₹1 lakh annually), calling the initiative a milestone for ensuring women’s economic self-reliance.
New Announcements for Dholai and Students
The Chief Minister also made several key announcements targeting development and welfare in the region:
- Orunodoi Scheme: An additional 3,000 women in the Dholai constituency will be included in the popular Orunodoi scheme.
- Student Support: Starting January 1st, students (boys) in colleges will also receive government financial assistance, similar to the support currently provided to college students (girls).
