Jamira–Bairabi Landslide: 29 Trips of 9 Trains Affected from Sept 5–10

Date:

Continuous heavy rainfall along the Assam–Mizoram border has triggered severe soil erosion and massive landslides on the Jamira–Bairabi railway section under the Lumding Division of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The slope failure near the Jamira–Bairabi stretch has compromised approximately 70 metres of the railway track formation, forcing railway authorities to suspend train movement and issue widespread cancellations, short-terminations, and short-originations affecting 29 trips across 9 key trains between September 5 and September 10, 2026.

According to official railway sources, the erosion extends up to 40 metres from the centre of the track, leaving the formation floating and unsafe for train operations. Restorative efforts are facing critical delays as the affected location lacks direct road access, making it exceptionally difficult to transport heavy machinery, repair materials, and workforce to the site.

Key Highlights & Impact Summary

  • Location of Incident: Between Jamira and Bairabi stations on the Katakhal–Bairabi section (Assam–Mizoram border).

  • Track Damage: 70 metres of track formation washed away/damaged due to continuous rain and landslides.

  • Duration of Disruption: September 5 to September 10, 2026.

  • Total Impact: 29 trips of 9 prominent mail, express, and passenger train services affected.

  • Operational Strategy: NFR has established special helpdesks and food/water distribution points at Hailakandi, Badarpur, Lumding, and Guwahati stations for affected passengers.

Restoration Efforts and Passenger Support

Senior engineers and technical teams from the Lumding Division are working on site to stabilize the embankment and reconstruct the washed-out formation. However, ongoing rainfall and inaccessible terrain continue to pose severe logistical hurdles.

Northeast Frontier Railway has urged passengers to check real-time train status via the official NTES app or Railway Enquiry Helpline (139) before planning their journeys.
