Silchar, Cachar | In a major blow to the interstate narcotics trade, Cachar Police intercepted a significant shipment of heroin at the Sonabarighat Bypass on Tuesday. The operation, led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Partha Pratim Das, resulted in the seizure of narcotics valued at approximately ₹2 Crores and the arrest of five individuals, including two women.
The Operation at Sonabarighat
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding a drug consignment moving from Mizoram, a special team from Cachar Police, including Additional SP Subrata Sen, set up an ambush near the Sonabarighat Bypass under the jurisdiction of the Rangirkhari Police Town Outpost.
During the vigil, police intercepted two Sribhumi-registered vehicles:
- AS-10-BC-0616: A Bolero Pickup used to transport the contraband.
- AS-10-J-0676: A Hyundai Venue acting as an escort for the shipment.
Upon a thorough search of the Bolero pickup, officers discovered a hidden chamber containing 40 soap cases filled with suspected heroin. The total weight of the seized substance is estimated at 406 grams.
Arrests and Sribhumi Connection
Police apprehended five suspects at the scene, revealing a cross-border smuggling link between Mizoram and Assam. Notably, both vehicles used in the crime are registered in the Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj).
The arrested individuals are identified as:
- Kamrul Islam (Sribhumi District)
- Helim Uddin (Sribhumi District)
- Sarmina Parvin (Female, Sribhumi District)
- Moon Piu (Champhai District, Mizoram)
- Langthang Pui (Female, Champhai District, Mizoram)
Investigation into Logistics and Linkages
SSP Partha Pratim Das confirmed that the drugs originated from the Champhai district in Mizoram, a known transit point for narcotics. The use of Sribhumi-registered vehicles suggests a well-coordinated logistics network involving local players.
“We have launched a full-scale investigation to identify the forward and backward linkages of this syndicate,” SSP Das stated. “Our goal is to dismantle the entire supply chain, from the suppliers in Mizoram to the distributors in Assam.”
This successful operation is part of the ongoing “War on Drugs” campaign intensified by the Assam Police to curb the flow of illegal substances through the Barak Valley.
