Fact Check: Is Silchar’s Elevated Corridor Cancelled Due to ‘Soft Soil’? PWD Clarifies Viral Rumors

For the past few days, a claim has been widely circulating across social media platforms alleging that the long-awaited Silchar Flyover (Elevated Corridor) project has been shelved because the town’s soil is too soft for such construction. This viral news caused significant panic, confusion, and disappointment among the residents of Silchar, who have been eagerly awaiting a permanent solution to the town’s persistent traffic gridlocks.

However, putting an end to all speculation, Public Works Department (PWD) Executive Engineer Aniruddha Nag has dismissed the viral claims as baseless rumors, assuring the public that the soil in Silchar is completely suitable and the flyover will be built as planned.

Viral Misconceptions Around Pile Testing

The Government of Assam allocated a substantial budget for the proposed Elevated Corridor in Silchar only after comprehensive technical feasibility studies and preliminary land surveys were completed. Currently, the project is in its initial field execution stage—Pile Testing.

Despite this, a section of social media users began spreading misleading information, confusing ongoing pile tests with routine soil testing and claiming the project had been scrapped.

To clear the air, PWD officials clarified the actual sequence of engineering procedures being followed:

  1. Soil Testing: Already completed prior to finalizing the project layout, design, and budget allocation.

  2. Pile Testing: Currently underway at designated points to test deep foundation capacity.

  3. Load Testing: Scheduled to follow pile testing to evaluate structural endurance.

  4. Land Acquisition & Utility Shifting: To be executed sequentially before erecting the main support piers.

What Triggered the Technical Speculations?

According to technical sources, the first pile testing was successfully carried out at the Ramnagar/Ranirghat point, followed by the second test near Hospital Road.

However, during the third pile test in the Rangirkhari/Rangpur segment, engineers encountered a minor technical challenge. Due to localized soil composition variations, boring could not proceed beyond a depth of 15 meters at that exact spot. As a standard engineering adjustment, officials shifted the site for the subsequent pile test to the old BRTF (Border Roads Task Force) campus premises.

Unaware of standard civil engineering protocols, a section of people misrepresented this routine site shift as a project failure and floated rumors of project cancellation.

“Engineering Exists to Simplify Challenges”: Executive Engineer

Addressing the public concern, PWD Executive Engineer Aniruddha Nag reaffirmed that soil quality and load-bearing capacity naturally vary from one spot to another across any urban stretch.

“It is completely normal for soil characteristics to differ across different points along a construction route. Engineering designs are crafted specifically based on the soil profile of each precise location. The core role of engineering is to overcome such natural challenges using technology,” said Nag.

He firmly reassured the citizens of Silchar that the elevated corridor project will be completed within its stipulated 30-month deadline, bringing long-term relief from traffic congestion to the major hub of the Barak Valley.
