Severe Track Subsidence at New Harangajao Suspends Train Operations on Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section

Date:

Train services along the strategic Lumding–Badarpur hill section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) faced major disruptions on Thursday night following severe track subsidence caused by rainfall near New Harangajao railway station.

Railway officials confirmed that ground settlement beneath Track No. 1 and Track No. 2 caused an estimated 200-metre stretch of the railway line to sink and bend between Km 118/1–3, leaving portions of the track virtually suspended in mid-air.

Precautionary Measures and Speed Restrictions

To prevent potential accidents, railway authorities immediately halted all train movements on Tracks 1 and 2. Operations have been temporarily diverted through Track No. 3, where trains are permitted to pass only under a strict speed restriction of 10 km/h.

“The structural integrity of Tracks 1 and 2 has been severely compromised due to ground movement under the embankment. Repairs have been prioritized, and engineering personnel are on-site evaluating the soil stability,” an NFR official stated.

Detailed Status of Affected Train Services

The speed restrictions and line closure have resulted in widespread train cancellations, short-terminations, and delays across the Lumding division.

Train Number & Name Service Status Operational Route Adjustment
15615 / 15616 Guwahati–Silchar–Guwahati Express Cancelled Service completely suspended
15611 / 15612 Rangiya–Silchar–Rangiya Express Cancelled Service completely suspended

On-site Restoration Efforts

Northeast Frontier Railway engineering crews and heavy machinery have been mobilized to the site on a war footing to stabilize the embankment and reconstruct the track bed. Railway authorities have set up passenger help desks at Guwahati, Lumding, Badarpur, and Silchar stations to assist stranded commuters with refund processing and alternative travel arrangements.
