Seven individuals have been arrested following a violent protest in Silchar against the Wakf Amendment Bill 2025. The protest turned chaotic when demonstrators clashed with police, pelting stones and injuring several officers. To restore order, police resorted to baton charges.

Cachar Police Superintendent Numal Mahatta confirmed the arrests and stated that the individuals have been presented in court and are now in custody. Investigations are ongoing, with more suspects identified for legal action.

The protest was deemed unlawful as it violated the election code of conduct, which came into effect with the announcement of panchayat election dates. Superintendent Mahatta emphasized that any activities disrupting law and order would face strict consequences.
