A tragic weekend outing has concluded with the grim confirmation of three fatalities, as the bodies of the remaining two missing first-year B.Tech students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar were successfully recovered on Sunday morning.
The students tragically drowned at the Boulsol (Hmunthajao) Waterfall near Harangajao in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

The three first-year students, who had embarked on a day trip to the scenic site, have been identified as:
- Sarbakritika Singh,20,Uttar Pradesh,First Year B.Tech (Electrical Engineering)
- Sauhard Rai,20,Uttar Pradesh,First Year B.Tech
- Radhika,19,Bihar,First Year B.Tech
Sarbakritika Singh was confirmed to be a student in the Electrical Engineering department. The specific departments of Sauhard Rai and Radhika, while confirmed as first-year B.Tech, are still being clarified by the institute.
🚨 Final Recovery and Official Procedure
The incident began on Saturday afternoon when the three students reportedly slipped and were swept away by the strong currents into the deep water.
- Saturday Evening: The body of Sarbakritika Singh was the first to be recovered by the rescue teams.
- Overnight Halt: Due to the operational difficulties caused by darkness, difficult terrain, and poor connectivity, the joint rescue operation by the SDRF, NDRF, and Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES) had to be suspended late Saturday night.
- Sunday Morning: The operation resumed at daybreak, and the teams successfully located and retrieved the bodies of the remaining two students, Sauhard Rai and Radhika, who were declared dead.
Post-Mortem Confirmed:
The Dima Hasao Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed that with all three bodies recovered, the remains would be transported to the Haflong Civil Hospital for the mandatory post-mortem examination.
🏛️ Institute and District Mourn
The NIT Silchar administration is in constant contact with the families, who are traveling to the region. A team of institute officials remains on the ground to assist in completing legal and medical formalities and coordinating the eventual transportation of the bodies back to the families in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The Chief Executive Member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Debolal Gorlosa, also visited the incident site on Sunday, expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy and conveying solidarity to the bereaved families and the institute.
The incident underscores the need for extreme vigilance near natural water bodies in the region, which become dangerously unpredictable during the post-monsoon period.
