Silchar Elevated Corridor Gaining Momentum: 2nd Test Pile Cast at Hospital Road; Club Road Next in Line

Date:

The long-anticipated ₹564.50-crore Capital Point to Rangirkhari Elevated Corridor project has achieved another crucial milestone. Following the initial mobilization and setup at Rangirkhari, the executing agency, Shree Gautam Construction Company, successfully completed the casting of the second test pile inside the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Water Supply Office campus on Hospital Road during the late hours of August 6, 2026.

To prevent daytime traffic bottlenecks along one of Silchar’s busiest medical corridors, the engineering team executed the deep boring and concrete casting operations overnight. Officials have confirmed that the project’s third test pile will be cast shortly near the Dak Bunglow Point on Club Road.

Strategic Multi-Point Geotechnical Testing Underway

Because the 3.462 km elevated corridor traverses varying urban soil profiles—from alluvial floodplains near Rangirkhari to heavily built-up commercial zones along Hospital Road and Club Road—conducting test piles across distinct locations is vital.

The test piling sequence is proceeding as follows:

  • 1st Test Pile (Rangirkhari Point): Heavy hydraulic rotary piling rigs were deployed to initiate preliminary soil sampling and borehole stabilization.
  • 2nd Test Pile (Hospital Road, PHE Campus): Cast-in-situ RCC bored pile casting was executed overnight on August 6 within the PHE Office premises to minimize public inconvenience.
  • 3rd Test Pile (Club Road, Dak Bunglow Point): Scheduled to commence immediately to evaluate soil strata near major town intersections.

Key Project Specifications & Engineering Layout

Sanctioned by the Assam Cabinet under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the single-pillar design minimizes ground footprint, ensuring that street-level commercial activities from Devdoot Point to Rangirkhari remain viable throughout the 30-month construction period.

Structural / Technical Parameter Layout Specifications
Total Corridor Length 3.462 km (Connecting Capital Point / Trunk Road to Rangirkhari)
Pillar Configuration 100% Single-Pillar (Central Mono-Pier) with Heavy RCC Hammerhead Pier Caps
Ground Service Roads Dual 5.5-meter wide service lanes running on both sides of the central piers
Elevated Carriageway 2-Lane Bi-directional Deck (7.0m clear carriageway, up to 8.5m with crash barriers)
Contract Value & Executor ~₹382 Crore awarded to Shree Gautam Construction Company
Approved Project Cost ₹564.50 Crore (including land acquisition and utility shifting)
Target Execution Window 30 Months from formal commencement

Next Phase: Curing & Hydraulic Load Testing

Following the completion of the test piles, each structure will undergo a mandatory 28-day curing process to attain peak structural compressive strength. Geotechnical engineers will subsequently perform Initial Compression Load Tests using hydraulic jack assemblies and counterweight platforms (kentledge loads) to determine the exact ultimate load capacity of Cachar’s subsoil.

“The steady execution of geotechnical test piles demonstrates that the project is moving ahead on schedule,” noted Cachar District BJP President Rupam Saha, reiterating the state government’s commitment to resolving Silchar’s long-standing traffic bottlenecks.

Once load test reports are certified by public works department engineers, full-scale production piling for the permanent central piers will begin along the main arterial route.
