Silchar Auto Drivers Threaten Agitation Over Traffic Chaos; Demand Ban on Outside Autos

Date:

The growing traffic gridlock in Silchar has prompted a strong response from the Silchar Electric Auto and Drivers’ Association. The body has taken a strict stand, demanding an immediate ban on the entry of auto-rickshaws from outside the city limits, claiming they are a major contributor to the worsening congestion.

During a press conference held today, association officials delivered a firm message to the local administration, outlining their key demands and future plans.

Unrestricted Outside Autos Aggravating Gridlock
According to the association, the traffic situation in Silchar is becoming increasingly complex, primarily due to the unrestricted flow of auto-rickshaws originating from areas outside the city.

Officials stated their position clearly:

“Our demand is very clear. Auto-rickshaws from outside Silchar should not be allowed to enter the city. If necessary, we will be forced to resort to a larger agitation.”

The association contends that this unchecked entry, combined with other systemic issues, is creating daily traffic nightmares, causing immense suffering for commuters, drivers, and pedestrians alike.

Beyond Autos: Encroachment and Parking Cited
The drivers’ association further pointed out that the traffic problem extends beyond just the presence of outside auto-rickshaws. They highlighted two other critical issues:

  • Footpath Encroachment: Illegal occupation of footpaths by vendors and others significantly narrows the roadways.
  • Unregulated Parking: The lack of disciplined and regulated parking management by the Municipality is leading to continuous blockages.

Call for Immediate Administrative Action
The association representatives confirmed that they have already discussed the pressing traffic issues with high-ranking officials, including the MP, MLA, District Administration, and the District Transport Officer (DTO). They are now urgently seeking proactive intervention from the administration to find a rapid and effective solution.

Membership Drive and Future Strategy
In a move to strengthen their unity and planning efforts, the association announced a special meeting this coming Sunday at a venue on Kathal Road.

They have extended an invitation to all willing auto owners and drivers in Silchar to attend the meeting, where new membership cards will be distributed.

“We request the presence of all auto owners and drivers. We want to work together to solve the traffic problems of Silchar,” an association representative announced.

The effectiveness of the association’s firm stance and the administration’s subsequent response in alleviating Silchar’s perennial traffic woes remains to be seen.
