Silchar Flyover Confirmed: Single-Pillar Design Adopted, 100 Cr Compensation Set for 6 Bigha Acquisition

Date:

The high-stakes standoff between the Assam government and local merchant associations over the proposed ₹564.50 Crore Elevated Corridor in Silchar has reached a definitive conclusion. Following a crucial public meeting at Banga Bhawan on November 19, chaired by Minister Kaushik Rai in the presence of two MPs, the administration affirmed the project’s original alignment while simultaneously approving a major design modification to safeguard local businesses.

Final Alignment & Single-Pillar Victory 🏆
The meeting, attended by top officials including District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, conclusively ruled out the alternative routes proposed by traders, such as the one via the Radio Station and Central Jail.

  • Alignment Confirmed: The 3.462 km corridor will proceed as planned, connecting Shoppers Stop (Rangirkhari) to Capital Point (Itkhola Road), a critical section of NH-306.
  • Design Shift: In a major concession addressing the traders’ fear of economic devastation from blocked shop entrances, the government has decided to construct the entire flyover using a Single-Pillar Model. The initial proposal featured a mix of single and double-pillar structures, but the unanimous shift to the single-pillar design is a direct response to public feedback.
  • Ministerial Statement: Minister Rai confirmed the move, stating the decision was taken to ensure that the infrastructure boost to Silchar does not cripple the commercial backbone of the area.

Land Acquisition and Financial Commitment 💰
With the design and route finalized, the process of land acquisition is set to accelerate, backed by a robust compensation package.

  • Acquisition Target: The administration confirmed that over 6 Bigha of land will be acquired to facilitate the construction of the stretch from Rangirkhari Point to Capital Point.
  • Compensation Fund: An allocation of ₹100 Crore has been earmarked specifically for compensation to the affected land and property owners, demonstrating the government’s commitment to social safeguards alongside development. (The total project cost is ₹564.50 Crore, including civil work and acquisition).

Future Expansion and Connectivity Hubs 📍
The administration also detailed future plans to ensure the elevated road maximises urban mobility across Silchar and the Barak Valley.

Future Landings: The project includes provisions for future phases to add dedicated landing and disembarking points to integrate surrounding arteries. These proposed future expansion hubs are:

  • Rangirkhari (specifically targeting vehicles coming from Sonai Road).
  • Lochan Bairagi Road.
  • Ambicapatty.

The consensus reached at the meeting paves the way for the foundation stone to be laid, marking the start of Silchar’s most ambitious infrastructure project aimed at transforming urban mobility and easing chronic traffic congestion, fulfilling a decade-long civic demand.
