Silchar Shock: ‘Dzire for Life’ President Geeta Pandey Arrested on Extortion and BNS Charges

Date:

SILCHAR, December 4, 2025 – In a move that has sent shockwaves through the local social activist community, Cachar Police today arrested Geeta Pandey (alias Gita Sharma), the self-styled social activist and president of the NGO Dzire for Life. The arrest, confirmed by Cachar Senior SP Partha Pratim Das, follows multiple complaints, including a primary FIR detailing charges of extortion and cheating.

The case against Pandey is notably severe, listing 12 separate sections under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a statute designed to tackle serious, often organized, criminal activity.

💰 The Extortion Allegation
The key complaint that led to the arrest was filed by Ratna Paul, a vegetable vendor in Silchar’s Fatak Bazar.

The Claim: Paul alleges that approximately a month ago, Pandey extorted ₹20,000 from her.

The Promise: The money was reportedly taken under the assurance that Pandey would use her influence to help Paul vacate her shop from unlawful occupation.

The Breach: According to the FIR, Pandey neither secured the shop’s vacation nor returned the money, which the complainant described as cheating through fraudulent misrepresentation.

Senior SP Partha Pratim Das confirmed the arrest, stating that Pandey faces multiple FIRs and is currently in police custody ahead of her court production.

⚖️ Targeting the Judiciary and Police
Beyond the direct cheating complaint, the FIR includes serious charges related to defamation against legal and public institutions.

The police have referenced a social media video (believed to be a recent Facebook Live) circulated by Pandey. In the video, she allegedly claimed that the judiciary and police “act only in exchange of money,” a statement that the FIR asserts was meant to scandalize, defame, and create distrust in the justice delivery system among the public.

📜 Organised Crime Sections Under BNS
The case is registered under a dozen sections of the BNS, prominently including multiple sub-sections of BNS Section 111, which deals with Organised Crime.

BNS Section Allegation Covered
111 (3), (4), (5), (6) Provisions related to abetment, membership, harbouring, and possession of proceeds of Organised Crime.
117 Extortion (related to voluntarily causing hurt to extort property).
296 Public Mischief.
351(2), 353, 356(3) Criminal force, intimidation, and assault.

The application of Section 111, which defines and punishes a broad range of “continuing unlawful activity” aiming for material benefit, indicates the police are treating the allegations as part of a larger, systemic crime pattern.

🗣️ Geeta Pandey’s Reaction
Following her apprehension, Geeta Pandey claimed she was taken by force from her home and was unaware of the reasons for the police action at that moment.

The arrest marks a major escalation in the allegations that have recently been circulating against the activist and her organization, Dzire for Life, which has faced online accusations of collecting money under false promises.
