Katigorah, Assam: A major accident occurred in the Rani Ghat area under the Krishnapur-Bhairabnagar Gram Panchayat (GP) in the Silchar constituency this Friday morning, where a fire erupted during the mechanical threshing of paddy. The incident resulted in the total destruction of several thousand rupees worth of harvested paddy, belonging to local farmers.
The fire broke out as farmers were using a mechanized thresher, often mounted on an auto-rickshaw or tractor, to separate the grain from the stalks. The blaze quickly spread, incinerating the farmer’s golden harvest.
Quick Response Averts Bigger Tragedy
The situation, however, could have escalated into a much larger disaster had it not been for the swift and heroic action of the local community, particularly the students and teachers of a nearby Madrasa.
Upon seeing the flames, the Madrasa students and teachers rushed to the scene. Their efforts, described as “war-footing,” were crucial in bringing the fire under control before it could spread to the surrounding areas or potentially damage other property. Their immediate intervention prevented what could have been a much more devastating loss.
Farmer Suffers Significant Loss
The incident caused a significant financial setback for one specific farmer, Ruhul Alam Laskar. Mr. Laskar’s thousands of rupees worth of freshly harvested paddy was completely reduced to ashes in the sudden blaze.
While the exact reason the fire erupted in the threshing machine is yet to be determined, such incidents are often caused by mechanical friction, overheating, or a spark igniting the highly flammable dry straw and chaff.
The local community has praised the courage and timely efforts of the Madrasa students and teachers, whose quick thinking saved the area from a major conflagration.
