In a major crackdown against the illegal diversion of agricultural commodities, Cachar Police intercepted two 12-wheeler trucks illegally transporting over 1,000 bags of subsidized urea fertilizer along the Assam-Mizoram border.
The seizure was made during an intensive checkpoint inspection at the Lailapur Police Patrol Post on the Silchar-Aizawl National Highway. Four individuals—including two drivers and two handymen—were taken into custody.
Subsidized Fertilizer Concealed Beneath Food Consignment
According to senior police officials, the Mizoram-bound heavy vehicles were stopped on suspicion during routine checking at the Lailapur border post. The occupants initially claimed the trucks were carrying routine food supplies.
However, a meticulous physical inspection revealed hundreds of urea sacks concealed beneath layers of food items. The transporters failed to produce valid documentation or official transport permits for the subsidized agricultural input.

Suspected Supply Chain Diversion To International Border
Preliminary investigations suggest the government-subsidized urea, originally allocated for local farmers in Assam, was being illegally diverted through Mizoram. Security agencies suspect the ultimate objective of such border transit rackets is smuggling the fertilizer across the international border into Myanmar.
Senior police personnel, including Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal, visited the spot to oversee legal proceedings. A comprehensive probe is underway to establish the origin of the consignment, trace the syndicate heads, and identify the intended recipients.
