Cachar On Flood Alert As Barak River Crosses Warning Level In Silchar; Upstream In Manipur Surpasses Danger Mark

Date:

Flood apprehension is mounting across Cachar district as the Barak River at Annapurna Ghat in Silchar crossed its warning level at 2:00 PM on Tuesday. According to official hydrological data, the river’s water level is maintaining a continuous rising trend and is rapidly advancing toward the danger mark.

Barak River Crosses Warning Level At Annapurna Ghat

Data released by the Central Water Commission (CWC) at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 21, indicates that the water level of the Barak River at Annapurna Ghat has reached 18.96 meters.

This puts the river 13 centimeters above its Warning Level (WL) of 18.83 meters. The official Danger Level (DL) for the Barak River at Silchar is 19.83 meters, meaning the current water level is now just 87 centimeters below the danger threshold.

Upstream Surge: Chotabekra In Manipur Crosses Danger Level

Compounding the flood threat for Cachar, the upstream water level in Manipur has already breached critical levels. At the Chotabekra observation station in the Imphal East district of Manipur, the Barak River crossed its danger mark early Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM.

As per CWC’s 7:00 PM bulletin, the water level at Chotabekra stands at 26.65 meters, exceeding the station’s Danger Level of 26.20 meters by 45 centimeters. The region recorded 11 mm of rainfall today.

Because Chotabekra serves as a crucial upstream gauge, the rapid influx of floodwaters from Manipur’s hills is expected to cascade downstream into Silchar, further accelerating the water rise at Annapurna Ghat over the next 12 to 24 hours.

CWC Forecasts Further Rise In Water Levels; Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued

The Central Water Commission has projected that between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM on Wednesday, July 22, the water level at Annapurna Ghat is expected to rise further to 19.15 meters.

Adding to the concern, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert across Cachar district for the next 2 to 3 days. The combination of upstream runoff and intense localized precipitation has heightened anxiety among residents living in low-lying riparian areas.

District Administration On High Alert

The Cachar District Administration and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) have confirmed that emergency response teams are on standby to handle any arising contingencies. Officials are closely monitoring riverbanks and embankments across the district.
